The Grand Masters
NB: The Order was governed by the Lieutenant when the position of Grand Master was vacated and/or before its election. The traditional numeration system of the Grand Masters does not include the founder of the Hospitallers (Beato Gerardo); therefore Puy is listed as the first Grand Master of the Order.

Grand Masters of Malta
In 1976, under the Protection of H.R.H. Prince Grand Master Don Roberto II Paternò Castello di Carcaci, the Order returned its Seat to Malta.
The Grand Mastery of the Order, according to the Costitution lain forth by the Prince Don Roberto II Paternò Castello of Carcaci, became hereditary by this same Family, The Constitution in existence had been regularly surveyed and registered first in Beirut in Lebanon then later by Notary Michel Gampert in Geneva and article 19 states: “The Prince and Grand Master is the hereditary constitutional leader of the Order. He is ordained with all of the ancient rights, privileges and prerogatives traditionally owed and inherent to the sovereignty of his charge, and he may exercise these powers in Council. When the hereditary descendents become no more or succession is impossible, he is elected by the Supreme Council.” For this reason the Order came to the Paternuense Collation.
